Laser Hair Removal FAQ
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser uses light energy with a specific wavelength to remove unwanted hair. During treatment, the laser emits energy in the form of light onto the skin and targets the melanin, or pigment, in the hair. The energy is absorbed by the hair and converts to heat which then destroys the hair follicles to prevent future growth.
What should I expect during my complimentary consultation?
During your consultation your licensed practitioner will explain, in detail, the entire process, review pre and post treatment care, and answer any questions you might have. If you should decide to proceed with laser treatments, you will complete a medical history form, and a personalized treatment plan will be discussed based on your specific needs and goals.
What areas of my body can be treated?
Any part of the body can be treated safely with laser, although it is not effective on white, gray, or red hair.
The Lumenis Splendor X uses state of the art technology to provide comfortable, safe, and effective treatments for all skin tones. Laser is approved by the FDA for long-term, permanent hair reduction.
How should I prepare for my treatment?
Laser is most effective when the hair is in the active growing stage and present in the follicles, therefore shaving is the only method of hair removal recommended before and during the time between treatments.
*Shave the area to be treated 24-48 hours before your appointment and arrive freshly showered with completely clean skin. Please avoid perfumes, lotions, oils, and deodorants on the skin the day of treatment.
*Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning lotions on the area being treated for 3 -4 weeks prior to your appointment.
*Avoid temporary hair removal methods such as waxing, threading, and plucking for at least 4 weeks before treatment, and while being treated with laser.
*Avoid bleaching and topical depilatory creams.
What should I expect after my treatment?
After laser treatments, mild redness and swelling is completely normal and may last 24 to 48 hours.
*Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks following laser treatments and wear sunscreen (at least 30SPF) to protect the skin.
*Avoid heavy exercise, saunas, hot tubs, and chlorine pools for 24 hours following laser treatments.
*Avoid all other temporary hair removal methods for the entire duration, and time in between treatments.
Two to three weeks following laser hair removal, the treated hair will shed. Exfoliating the area with a wash cloth will help this process.
In the following weeks you will notice a decrease in hair growth as you progress through the course of your treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
Multiple treatments are required to achieve long term results. Not all hair grows on the same cycle, and laser is most effective when the hair is in the active growing stage. The number of treatments varies depending on the particular area of the body and individual progress.
Your licensed practitioner will create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs and goals to ensure the most effective result.
How much does laser cost?
Laser hair removal treatments start at $40, and vary according to the body area and number of treatments required to achieve the desired result. During your consultation a treatment plan will be discussed based on these factors.
